Development began in 1942; first deployments followed during the Ardennes Offensive and in Germany in 1945. Its main armament is a 90 mm M3 cannon, complemented by two machine guns. A total of around 2.202 vehicles were produced. With improved armour and a new chassis, it was clearly superior to the M4 Sherman and served as the basis for later American tanks such as the M46 Patton.
