Powered by a 3.6-liter V8 twin-turbo engine with gasoline direct injection (FSI) and around 610 hp, the R8 achieved five Le Mans victories between 2000 and 2005. In its active period, it achieved a total of 63 wins in 80 race starts. A technical highlight was the modular rear end – the gearbox and rear axle could be swapped in minutes using quick-release fasteners. The FSI gasoline direct injection introduced in 2001 found its way into Audi's production vehicles shortly thereafter.
