The 30-meter-high figure with a 28-meter arm span was begun in 1922 and inaugurated on October 12, 1931. It was designed by Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and executed by French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski. The figure is made of reinforced concrete and clad in soapstone. Corcovado rises 710 meters above sea level, making the statue widely visible over the city.
