It was not completed until 1836 – Napoleon did not live to see its completion. The structure is 49.5 meters high and 44.8 meters wide. The names of 558 French generals and 128 battles are engraved on its inner surfaces. Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I, where an Eternal Flame has burned since 1923.
