Its decisive feature is not a conventional driving-wheel drive, but a cylinder block mounted on the side, which drives all the wheels simultaneously via a drive-shaft system. This made the Shay suitable for very steep, winding routes and poor track – exactly what was needed in North American forestry and mining. It was slower than express steam locomotives but more reliable on difficult terrain.
