The original – the 4-4-0 steam locomotive

The 4-4-0 locomotive, known in American railway parlance as the “American”, was the most widely used type of steam locomotive of the 19th century in North America. The designation 4-4-0 describes the wheel arrangement according to the Whyte system: four leading wheels at the front, four driving wheels in the middle, no trailing wheels. It was light, fast and reliable – ideal for the long, largely straight routes of the North American railway. From the 1850s to the 1880s it was in service on almost all American railway lines. Historically famous 4-4-0 locomotives took part in the first transcontinental railway connection in the USA (1869). The locomotive “General”, hijacked in 1862 during the famous Andrews' Raid, was also a 4-4-0.
