The Original – the Antonov An-225 Mriya

The Antonov An-225 "Mriya" (Ukrainian for "Dream") was the world's longest and heaviest aircraft in active service. It was developed in the 1980s in the Soviet Union to transport the Buran space shuttle on its back – a task that required an aircraft beyond all known dimensions. With a length of 84 meters, a wingspan of 88.4 meters, and a maximum takeoff weight of 640 tons, the An-225 overshadowed all other aircraft until its destruction in February 2022 during the Russian attack on Kyiv-Hostomel Airport. Six ZMKB Progress D-18T turbofan engines, each with 229.5 kN of thrust, powered the behemoth, which could carry up to 250 tons of payload. The landing gear comprised 32 wheels. The cargo hold was 43.3 meters long, 6.4 meters wide, and 4.4 meters high – large enough to transport 50 cars. With a range of up to 15,400 kilometers, the An-225 was also designed for intercontinental flights. In March 1989, the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale recognized the An-225 as the holder of 106 world records. Only a single airworthy example was completed worldwide.
