The original – the Himeji-jo

Himeji Castle (Himeji-jo) in the Japanese city of Himeji is one of the most beautiful and best-preserved castles in Japan. The original fortress dates back to the 14th century; the present five-storey main keep took the form we know today in 1609. Thanks to its brilliant white plastered façades, it bears the nickname "Hakuro-jo" or "Shirasagi-jo" – Castle of the White Heron. The castle is considered a masterpiece of Japanese castle architecture: 83 buildings and a sophisticated defensive system of winding paths, gates and loopholes have survived almost completely intact. In 1993, Himeji-jo became the first Japanese structure to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.
