Mould King vs. Cada vs. LEGO Technic – Which building blocks are really worth it?

Mould King vs. Cada vs. LEGO Technic – Welche Klemmbausteine lohnen sich wirklich?

Anyone looking to build a sophisticated interlocking brick model today faces a decision that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago: LEGO Technic, Mould King, or Cada? What was long considered a premium monopoly is now a vibrant market with clever alternatives. We have taken a close look at the three most important brands – and honestly reveal where each brand shines and where it has weaknesses.

The market for building blocks is maturing

For a long time, LEGO Technic was the undisputed benchmark for mechanical building block models. If you wanted to build an excavator with pneumatics or a sports car with a gearbox, you couldn't avoid the Danish brand. But for several years now, Chinese manufacturers have been shaking up the market – especially Mould King and Cada. Both brands focus on high-quality bricks, creative original developments, and prices that are often significantly below LEGO's level.

But are the alternatives really equivalent? Is the surcharge for LEGO worth it? And what distinguishes Mould King from Cada? We have built several sets ourselves, checked the workmanship, and compared building experiences.

1. Brick quality and processing

Let's start with the most important criterion: How does the building block feel in your hand?

LEGO Technic has set the standard for decades. The clutch power is constant, tolerances are extremely tight, the surface is flawless. Anyone who has ever built with LEGO knows the satisfying "click" when connecting pieces.

Mould King has made enormous progress in recent years. Current sets in the Expert series (e.g., the 17000 and 13000 series) achieve a clutch power that comes very close to LEGO. The bricks are made of high-quality ABS, are colorfast, and fit precisely – even with complex mechanics.

Cada is qualitatively on a similar level to Mould King. Especially the larger Cada car models like the Cada Lamborghini Centenario or the Cada Ferrari 488 Pista impress with clean processing and strong clutch power.

2. Detail accuracy and design

Here, an interesting picture emerges: LEGO Technic is conservative and focuses on a few, very elaborately developed models per year. Mould King and Cada, on the other hand, bring new sets to the market every month – including many unlicensed but deceptively real replicas of Bugatti, Ferrari, McLaren, Mercedes G-Class, or Land Rover Defender.

This has a big advantage: Models that LEGO would never produce are immediately available here. If you want a Land Rover Defender as a building block model looking to build one, you will find a highly detailed set at Mould King – you'll look in vain at LEGO.

3. Mechanics, motors, and remote control

This is where it gets really exciting. While LEGO Technic sells its Powered-Up components separately, many Mould King and Cada sets include motorized functions directly—including app control. Examples:

  • Mould King 13107 Crane Truck: 8 motors, app control, extendable stabilizers, fully functional telescopic arm.
  • Mould King 17023 Bulldozer: 6 motors, pneumatics, double bucket.
  • Cada C61051W Telehandler: Remote control, LED lighting, fully functional boom arm.

For comparable LEGO models, you would have to buy additional motors, hubs, and batteries for several hundred euros separately.

4. Price-performance ratio

Probably the clearest argument for the Asian brands: They are cheaper – often significantly.

A comparable LEGO Technic model of a sports car quickly costs 300–450 euros. The Mould King Koenigsegg comes in at €108.95 – with a similar number of parts, similar size, and comparable level of detail. The Cada Ferrari 488 Pista (€189.95) is also a fraction of the price of comparable premium sets.

5. Instructions and building experience

LEGO instructions are legendary. Mould King has caught up significantly here in recent years: modern sets come with printed instructions plus an additional app manual (3D rotation function). Cada also offers high-quality booklets that sometimes even feel a touch more nostalgic than LEGO – with bold colors and detailed mechanical diagrams.

Anyone who values an undisturbed building experience will be satisfied with all three brands. Beginners should note, however: Mould King Expert series sets are demanding and not something to build in an hour on the side. Expect 8–25 hours of building time.

6. Which brand is worthwhile for whom?

Our conclusion after several comparison builds:

  • LEGO Technic is worthwhile if you prioritize maximum quality consistency, licensed partners (Ferrari, Lamborghini Sián, NASA), and guaranteed value stability.
  • Mould King is the right choice for fans of motorized construction vehicles, excavators, cranes, and sports cars who want maximum functionality at a fair price.
  • Cada scores particularly well with detailed car models, elegant design language, and excellent processing in 1:8 scale.

Our tip: Start with a mid-range set

If you've only built LEGO so far and are curious about the alternatives, we recommend starting with a medium-sized model for 80–150 euros. This way, you can experience the difference without taking a big financial risk. The following have proven themselves:

Conclusion: There isn't "one" right brand

The honest answer: LEGO Technic, Mould King, and Cada all have their place. LEGO remains the premium classic with licensed models and absolute consistency in quality. Mould King is the exciting choice for everyone who wants motorized giant models without spending 500 euros. Cada shines with elegant car kits that often stand as small works of art on the shelf.

Anyone looking for maximum building fun for their money should definitely give Mould King and Cada a chance. The era when "no-name bricks" were not a real alternative in terms of quality is over.
