The Inspiration – The Dutch Windmill

The windmill is the most famous symbol of the Netherlands and represents centuries of Dutch engineering. Starting in the 13th century, windmills were used in Holland to pump water out of the low-lying polder land and make the land arable. In their heyday in the 17th and 18th centuries, there were more than 10,000 windmills in the Netherlands; today, around 1,000 remain. The windmills of Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage complex consisting of 19 historic mills in the province of South Holland, are considered the most famous example of this unique water management landscape.
