Building Block Quality: How to Spot Good Sets – and Which Brand Suits You

Cada vs. Mould King: Which building block brand is right for your next - KBS - World of Bricks

Today, building blocks are made by many manufacturers. That's good news for you, because the choice has never been bigger. But it also means quality isn't the same everywhere. Two sets with a similar piece count can feel completely different while you build.

Here you'll find out how to recognise high-quality building blocks and what the individual brands stand for – so your next set is a direct hit.

How to recognise high-quality building blocks

Clutch power

Good bricks hold together firmly and can still be separated without force. If they sit too loosely, your model becomes unstable. If they sit too tightly, every building mistake becomes a test of patience.

Precise fit

Precision matters especially with Technic sets. Axles need to turn easily and gears need to mesh cleanly. Inaccurate parts lead to friction, play in the gearbox or jammed mechanisms.

Material and colour

High-quality bricks are usually made of ABS plastic. Look for smooth surfaces without burrs and consistent colours – a red should look the same in every bag.

Instructions and sorting

With several thousand pieces, clear, well-printed instructions are worth their weight in gold. Numbered bags for the individual building stages make assembly much more relaxed.

Printing and stickers

Details such as logos, dashboards or lettering are created with printed parts or stickers. In good sets, stickers are cleanly cut and can be applied precisely. Printed parts look particularly high-quality and last permanently.

Technology and electronics

With motorised sets, what counts is reliable motors, a stable connection to the remote or app and neatly finished cables. You can read more about this in our guide to remote-controlled building blocks.

What does LEGO-compatible mean?

LEGO-compatible means that bricks and Technic parts match LEGO in grid dimensions and connections. That has real advantages for you. You can reuse bricks from your existing collection, combine sets from different brands and carry out your own modifications.

Anyone who likes building their own ideas benefits in particular. With a few extra parts, a vehicle quickly becomes a new variant.

Piece count isn't everything

A high piece count sounds impressive, but says little about quality. What matters is what the pieces turn into: How detailed is the model? What functions does it have? How sturdy is it in the end?

A well-designed set with fewer pieces is often more fun than a huge model with weak mechanics. So always check the functions, dimensions and scale on the product page too.

The brands in our range

Every manufacturer has its strengths. You'll find these brands at KBS:

Mould King

Mould King stands for large, motorised Technic models: trucks, construction machines, cranes and trains, many of them with remote control and app. A good starting point is the remote-controlled Mould King Excavator 13112.

CaDA

CaDA has made a name for itself above all with car models – from supercars to Formula 1. One example is the officially licensed Cada F1 Kick Sauber C44 in 1:8 scale. CaDA also offers construction machines and detailed buildings.

Reobrix

Reobrix covers a wide range: landmarks such as Tower Bridge, aircraft, vehicles and real large-scale projects. The Reobrix Ring Crane SK6000 has 7,477 pieces and eight motors and stands almost two and a half metres tall when finished.

Wange

In our range, Wange is all about architecture: Golden Gate Bridge, Neuschwanstein Castle, Brandenburg Gate or the Colosseum. Ideal if you're looking for a model that shines as a decorative piece.

JIE STAR

JIE STAR offers detailed display models, for example aircraft and ships such as the aircraft carrier Fujian.

You'll also find sets from Guly, Bole Brick, Mork, Panlos and Xingbao in our shop.

Mould King or CaDA?

Many people face this question with their first set. The short answer: Mould King scores with motorised vehicles and machines, CaDA with car models and design. But both brands also have sets from the other area in their range – so it's worth looking at the individual model rather than just the brand. You'll find the detailed comparison in our article Mould King vs. Cada vs. LEGO Technic.

Checklist before you buy

  • Are the piece count, dimensions and functions clearly stated?
  • Does the theme suit you – vehicle, machine, building?
  • Do you want a display model or a set with motors?
  • Will missing pieces be replaced?
  • Can you return the set if it doesn't convince you?

Typical buying mistakes

The most common mistake: looking only at the price. A set that frustrates you after purchase is no bargain in the end. Size and difficulty are underestimated just as often. A model more than a metre long needs space, and an expert set can overwhelm beginners.

Also pay attention to where you buy. A shop with clear product information, a spare-parts service and fair returns takes a lot of risk off your shoulders.

How to keep your bricks looking good for a long time

Even high-quality bricks need care. Don't leave finished models in direct sunlight permanently, as UV light can change colours over time. Dust is best removed with a soft brush. And when you take a model apart, sort the pieces straight away – that way your next project gets started faster.

Try it risk-free

All sets at KBS are LEGO-compatible – so you can freely combine brands and reuse bricks from your collection. If a piece is missing, we'll send it free of charge. And with our 30-day money-back guarantee, you can test any brand yourself.

Frequently asked questions about building block quality

Are building blocks compatible with LEGO?

Yes. All sets at KBS are LEGO-compatible. You can combine them with bricks and Technic parts from other sets.

How can I recognise low-quality building blocks?

Typical warning signs are very loose or extremely tight connections, burrs on the edges, colour differences between identical parts and unclear instructions.

Which building block brand is the best?

That depends on what you want to build. For motorised vehicles, Mould King is a strong choice; for cars, CaDA; for architecture, Wange and Reobrix.
