The Original – the 4-4-0 Steam Locomotive

The 4-4-0 locomotive, known in American jargon as the "American," was the most widespread steam locomotive type of the 19th century in North America. The designation 4-4-0 describes the wheel arrangement according to the Whyte system: four leading wheels, four driving wheels in the middle, and no trailing wheels. It was light, fast, and reliable – ideal for the long, largely straight routes of North American railways. From the 1850s to the 1880s, it was in use on almost all American railway lines. Historically famous 4-4-0 locomotives were involved in the first transcontinental railroad connection in the USA (1869). The locomotive "General," which was stolen during the famous Andrews' Raid in 1862, was also a 4-4-0.
