The Original – Notre-Dame de Paris

Notre-Dame de Paris is one of the most significant Gothic cathedrals in the world and the religious heart of Paris. Construction began in 1163 under Bishop Maurice de Sully and took almost two centuries. The cathedral stands on the Île de la Cité, an island in the Seine, and has been the scene of important events for centuries: Napoleon's coronation took place here, and kings were buried here. The architecture is a masterpiece of High Gothic style: flying buttresses support the vault, enormous rose windows flood the interior with colored light, and the two 69-meter-high west towers define the silhouette of Paris. The catastrophic fire on April 15, 2019, during which the crossing tower collapsed, made Notre-Dame known worldwide as a symbol of cultural heritage and reconstruction. The restored cathedral was reopened in December 2024.
