The Original – St. Andrew's Cathedral

St. Andrew's Cathedral in St. Andrews, Scotland, was built starting in 1160 and consecrated in 1318 in the presence of King Robert the Bruce. With an internal length of around 109 meters, it was the largest church in Scotland at the time of its completion and attracted pilgrims from all over Europe – as it was believed to house relics of the Apostle Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. The X-shaped St. Andrew's Cross on the Scottish flag is still a reminder of him today. During the Scottish Reformation of 1559, the cathedral was severely damaged and fell into ruin over the following centuries. Today, it is one of Scotland's most important historical sites.
